My growth at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital

Emma Zhang

How time flies! When I first entered SIR RUN RUN SHAW HOSPITAL in November 2005, I couldn’t image that I would work at this hospital for about 7 years. Because I got my Bachelor’s of Nursing at a college in Beijing, I finished my clinical novitiate at a Beijing hospital. There, my clinical nurse teachers focused more on practicing. We were initiated into learning their knowledge, their experiences and skill practices. After we mastered one procedure, we were allowed to learn another.

When I came to Hangzhou, my first internship department at SRRSH was in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery and my first clinical teacher was Mrs. Li. She is an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and experienced clinical nurse. Because I was bashful and timid then, she would teach me the knowledge in soft voice and with a lot of patience. When it was time to learn new procedures, she would first show me three times. After making sure that I was familiar with the steps to take, she would give me a chance to do it by myself under her supervision. When she was sure that I had mastered this procedure, she would give me some space to practice it over and over to ensure that I could do it better. For example, although I had finished three months of internship at the Beijing’s hospital, I still couldn’t inject into the veins when I entered SRRSH. When Mrs. Li became familiar with my situation, she told me that it didn’t matter and taught me how to inject into the veins. Before I finished my internship at this department, I had injected into the vein several times. This helped to build my confidence and enhanced my learning interest.

When it comes to adult learners, I know it is important to enhance their interest and make sure they know how to perform independently instead of just telling them how to do a task. Our hospital internship system is full-blown and scientific, and I am happy that I became one member of this big family.
