·             His innovative anterior thoracolumbar surgical technique is applied to treat thoracolumbar fracture, spinal tuberculosis and tumor, which doesnot only reduce surgical trauma, but also shortens the surgery time and improve the efficacy of surgery. His research achievement was published as ‘Course of Orthopaedic Surgery’ in Chinese Journal of Orthopaedics (5th issue, 2008), the most authoritative professional journal in China. It has also been spread and applied across the country.

·             Professor Fan’s in-depth study of lumbar fusion operation discusses relevant questions on the choice of surgery, evaluation of efficacy, soft tissue injury prevention and prevention of operation complication. His research achievement was published as ‘Course of Orthopaedic Surgery’ in Chinese Journal of Orthopaedics (1st issue, 2010), the most authoritative professional journal in China, and has also been applied across the country.

·             Professor Fan is the one who first put forward the concept ‘Distraction first and reduction later’ to treat lumbar spondylolisthesis, which simplifies the surgical procedure and improves the efficacy of treatment. His research achievement was published in Chinese Journal of Orthopaedic, the most authoritative professional journal in China.

·             Professor Fan takes the lead in reporting the internal fixation of thoracolumbar fracture and the evaluation system of surgical trauma in China, which opened up a new mini-invasive approach for the treatment of spinal fracture. The research was published in Chinese Journal of Orthopaedic, the most authoritative professional journal in China.

·             Professor Fan first systematically raised the questions on adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) after lumbar fusion and first put forward the concept of ‘Fusion disease’ in China. His research was published in Chinese Journal of Orthopaedic, the most authoritative professional journal in China.

·             He applies segmental decompression to treat severe cervical spondylosis, and has solved technical problems such as serious surgical injury and unstable internal fixation caused by the multilevel cervical spondylotic surgery.
