Radiation Oncology

Overview

Radiation oncology is a medical specialty that involves radiation in cancer treatment. Doctors who specialize in treating cancer with radiation (radiation oncologists) use radiation therapy to treat a wide variety of cancers. Radiation therapy uses carefully targeted and regulated doses of high-energy radiation to kill cancer cells. Some cancer cells die immediately after treatment, but most of them die because radiation damages the chromosomes and DNA, hence the cells can no longer divide and the tumor can't grow. Radiotherapy can be applied to the treatment of various kinds of common cancer, such as head and neck cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, lymphoma, soft tissue tumor, etc.

The Radiotherapy Department of SRRSH, founded in 1994, is the first radiotherapy department in general hospitals in Zhejiang province, which is also one of the doctor degree awarding points of Zhejiang University and one of the national key disciplines. Our department is a clinical department specializing in various tumor radiotherapy for many years, including individualized radiotherapy and multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment. It is now located in two campuses, Qingchun and Xiasha, with a total of more than 100 beds. There are more than 4000 patients treated every year, and more than 7000 outpatient visits annually. In clinical practice, precise image-guided conformal/volumetric intensity-modulated radiotherapy and stereotactic radiotherapy are mainly used, and chemotherapy, targeted therapy and biological immunotherapy are also used to maximize the therapeutic effect of tumor treatment. We have become a leading role in radiotherapy and comprehensive treatment of various common tumors, such as head and neck tumors, nasopharyngeal cancer, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, hepatobiliary cancer, pancreatic cancer, lymphoma, gynecological tumors and soft tissue tumors.

It is our pressing mission to offer sincere, coordinated, loving care through research, learning and teaching.

Faculty

We have more than 60 staff members, including Radiation Oncologists, Medical Physicists, Radiation Therapists, and nurses. These physicians work with other members of the radiation therapy team to develop your treatment plan to ensure that each treatment is given accurately. Your radiation oncologist will also monitor your progress and adjust the treatment as necessary to make sure that the radiation is hitting its target while minimizing side effects. Before, during and after your radiation therapy treatments, your radiation oncologist will work closely with other cancer doctors, such as medical oncologists and surgeons, to make sure that the radiation is highly effective.

Medical Care Services

Treatment may combine radiation with surgery and chemotherapy. We offer state-of-the-art radiation therapy, which may include:

3-D conformal radiation therapy (3-D CRT).

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).

Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT).

Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT).

Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT).

Direction and Achievements of Research

Equipped with specialized basic laboratories, researchers in the department carry out research on radiotherapy sensitization, radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy/targeted therapy/immunotherapy to reduce radiotherapy side effects and improve radiotherapy efficacy. We also have participated in many clinical trials, aiming to provide evidence for the clinical application of radiotherapy combined with immunotherapy. The department has undertaken a number of National Natural Science Fund projects, as well as provincial Natural Science Foundation and sanitation projects. More than 20 academic papers have been published.
