Overview

The Department of Gastroenterology of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital is a leading high-level, high-standard clinical gastrointestinal center in Zhejiang Province providing quality, comprehensive and continuous health care for all patients suffering from problems in the gastrointestinal tract, liver, bile duct and pancreas. Clinically, we have various subspecialties, including Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), gastrointestinal motility diseases, early gastrointestinal tumors, and liver, biliary tract and pancreas.

Our department provides services for over 11,000 inpatients and 260,000 outpatients each year. Over 120,000 diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures are performed annually, including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic sphincterotomy with gallstone extraction, endoprosthesis for biliary obstruction, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), diagnostic procedures and interventional therapies by endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE), endoscopic hemostasis of bleeding ulcers, ligation or sclerotherapy of bleeding varices or internal hemorrhoids, esophageal prosthesis, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, and percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy.

Our IBD center is a national center of excellence in IBD, as well as a national referral center for difficult bowel diseases in Zhejiang. We also have a first-class gastrointestinal motility clinical research center, implementing a number of diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for functional gastrointestinal disorders. These include high-resolution esophageal manometry, 24h pH impedance monitoring, ManoScan 3D anal manometry, gastric motivity and receptivity examination, hydrogen-methane breath tests, biofeedback therapy, and gastrointestinal pacing therapy.

We maintain a close relationship with great experts from the US, Switzerland, Germany, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong, and keep providing quality health service with an international perspective.

[Achievement of Research]

The department has undertaken more than 30 projects, including National Natural Science Foundation projects, Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Foundation and sanitation projects, and international cooperation projects. We have published more than 120 academic papers and books, and our research results have been recognized and quoted in international and national guidelines.

 

[International Exchange and Cooperation]

Our department has been in close cooperation with Mayo Clinic, the University of Michigan Medical School, Loma Linda University Medical Center and the University of Zurich. We conduct regular clinical consultation of difficult diseases, scientific research cooperation and overseas exchange training. Members of our department have been invited to give oral presentations at international conferences for many times, and have organized numbers of international academic conferences, such as American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Professional Conference in China and Chinese Small Bowel Disease Forum.
