Hematology

Overview

The Department of Hematology is one of the earliest specialties established at SRRSH. At the beginning of its establishment, we received systematic training and management from Loma Linda University Health in the United States, ensuring that our clinical operations align with international standards. Our department was the first in Zhejiang province to establish a Lymphoma Diagnosis and Treatment Center. Utilizing a diagnostic platform supported by the Pathology Department, we provide accurate diagnoses and personalized treatments for lymphoma patients.

In September 2017, SRRSH became the first member of Mayo Clinic Care Medicine in China, with the Hematology Department's Myeloma Center designated as a key collaborative project. This cooperation with Mayo Clinic allows myeloma patients to receive treatment recommendations from a leading global medical institution.

Furthermore, the Hematology Department collaborates with the City of Hope National Medical Center in the United States to create a diverse platform for academic exchange and researcher training, providing patients with medical services that meet international standards. In terms of education, the Hematology Department is a key medical discipline in Zhejiang Province and is one of the first standardized training bases for resident physicians designated by the National Health Commission. All physicians in the Hematology Department hold doctoral or master's degrees, forming a highly qualified team with strong academic backgrounds, excellent skills and experience, and outstanding medical ethics.

Technical advantages

In recent years, the Department of Hematology has made significant strides in the fields of lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and leukemia by incorporating immunotherapy and targeted treatments, such as CAR-T and other innovative technologies. These advancements, based on traditional therapies, have greatly improved the survival rates of patients and have successfully achieved the goal of providing quality of life during treatment.

Lymphoma: The Hematology Department was the first in the province to establish a Lymphoma Diagnosis and Treatment Center in collaboration with the Pathology, Radiotherapy, Laboratory, Radiology, and Surgical Oncology Departments. By integrating high-quality resources from these related fields, the department has created an MDT model that enables precise subtype analysis of lymphoma while standardizing, rationalizing, and personalizing treatment. In 2022, the Department of Hematology established a multidisciplinary CAR-T treatment team at SRRSH, successfully implementing a groundbreaking CAR-T cell therapy for lymphoma. This marked the first such treatment in the hospital and positioned it among the leading efforts in the province, generating positive social outcomes.

Multiple Myeloma: The Hematology Department was an early adopter of stratified treatment for multiple myeloma patients, employing the latest treatment concepts and medications. This has resulted in the highest overall response rates and long-term survival rates in Zhejiang province, with some patients exceeding ten years of survival.

Bone Marrow Transplantation and Clinical Trials: As one of the earliest centers in Zhejiang province to perform bone marrow transplants, the Hematology Department has developed robust techniques in autologous stem cell transplantation, successfully conducting these procedures for nearly 20 years. This has significantly extended the survival of patients with hematologic malignancies such as lymphoma and myeloma. As of 2024, the department has initiated a total of 29 clinical trials, with 5 currently recruiting participants, covering various hematologic malignancies, including lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and myeloproliferative diseases. These clinical trials offer patients access to the latest diagnostic and therapeutic options, providing substantial benefits.

Research achievements

The Hematology Department focuses on precision diagnosis and treatment of malignant lymphomas and multiple myeloma. We also conducted research on the application of allogeneic and autologous stem cell transplantation in hematological malignancies. The department has hosted and undertaken 6 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation and several provincial and ministerial research projects. It has published dozens of academic papers in journals including Blood, Haematologica, Bone Marrow Transplant, Oncology Reports, and Annals of Hematology. Research achievements have received the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of the Ministry of Education's Science and Technology Progress Award for Higher Education Institutions, the third prize of the Zhejiang Province Science and Technology Progress Award, and the second prize of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education's Science and Technology Progress Award.
