Position:President
Title:Professor/Senior Consultant
Degree/diploma:M.D., Ph.D.
Doctoral/master's supervisor:Doctoral Supervisor
Areas of focus:
Minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as hepatobiliary carcinomas, hepatic calculus, pancreatic cancers, and gastrointestinal cancers.
1.Invented the multi-functional surgical dissector for laparoscopy and established the scraping and aspiration dissection technique for liver transection. This technique has been included in the surgical atlas of the American College of Surgeons. He innovatively proposed the regional vascular occlusion technique and developed Cai's ALPPS, which expanded the indications for laparoscopic liver resection and improved surgical safety.
2.Invented the biodegradable intestinal anastomosis stent and established the stent-based intestinal anastomosis technique (the third anastomosis technique following suture and stapling methods). This technique simplifies the surgery and enhances surgical safety. This anastomosis method can also be used for the primary reconstruction of soldiers' intestinal rupture on the battlefield and after the surgical resection of intestinal inflammatory diseases, eliminating the need for a second-stage operation.
3.Invented the biodegradable intestinal diverting stent and established the stent-based intestinal diverting technique, ending the 170-year-old application of ileostomy. This avoids the use of an anal bag and eliminates the need for a second-stage operation.
4.Creatively proposed the concept of remote surgery, solving the worldwide problem of the lack of force perception in robotic surgery.
Biographical sketch
Dr. CAI Xiujun graduated from the Department of Clinical Medicine, Zhejiang University School of Medicine in 1986, and obtained a Doctor of Surgery degree from the same institution in 1993. From 1994 to 1995, he furthered his studies at West Virginia University in the United States, and also served as a visiting scholar at Loma Linda University in 2004 and Marshfield Clinic in 2007. From 1986 to 1996, he successively held positions as resident physician, attending physician/lecturer, and associate professor in the General Surgery Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. Since 1996, he has worked at SRRSH, serving as associate chief physician/associate professor, and currently as chief physician/professor.
He has been working on the front lines of clinical practice, scientific research, and teaching for a long time. He is proficient in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in hepatobiliary surgery and gastrointestinal surgery, and has profound attainments in the field of minimally invasive surgery. He has numerous innovative technical research and inventions, and has pioneered both globally and nationally in many techniques and surgical methods. He independently developed the laparoscopic multi-functional surgical dissector and established the laparoscopic scraping and aspiration dissection method for liver resection and the laparoscopic regional hepatic vascular occlusion technique. He pioneered the completely laparoscopic two-step hepatectomy with the liver-encircling tape method (Cai's ALPPS), as well as the research and development of intestinal anastomosis stents and intestinal diverting stents, and the establishment of the stent-based intestinal anastomosis, and the stent-based intestinal diverting technique. He presided over the formulation of the first Chinese operative guidelines for laparoscopic liver resection, established the first minimally invasive medicine discipline in China, and founded the Chinese Laparoscopic Liver Surgery Academy. In 2021, he took the lead in establishing the National Engineering Research Center for Minimally Invasive Instrument Innovation and Application, the first national engineering research center in the field of minimally invasive medicine in China.
He has presided over and undertaken a number of scientific research projects, such as the National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program), the "12th Five-Year Plan" National Key Technology R&D Program, the National Key Scientific Research Instrument Development Project, the General Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Major Special Projects of Zhejiang Province, and the Key Scientific and Technological Projects of Zhejiang Province. He has won the National Award for Excellence in Innovation, a Second Prize of the National Technological Invention Award, two Second Prizes of the National Scientific and Technological Progress Award, one First Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education, one First Prize of the Technological Invention Award of Zhejiang Province, the Grand Contribution Award of the Science and Technology Award of Zhejiang Province, three First Prizes of the Science and Technology Progress Award of Zhejiang Province, the award of Science and Technology achievement by Ho Leung Ho Lee, the Wu Jieping Medicine Innovation Award, the Tan Jiazhen Clinical Medicine Award, and the Norman Bethune style Good Doctor Award.
He founded the English journal Journal of Laparoscopic, Endoscopic & Robotic Surgery. He has published over 100 papers in SCI journals and magazines of the Chinese Medical Journal series. He serves as the chief editor or editorial board member of more than ten professional magazines, including Medical Reference News - Minimally Invasive Surgery Channel, Chinese Journal of Practical Surgery, and Chinese Journal of Minimally Invasive Surgery. He has also compiled over 10 monographs and textbooks, such as Laparoscopic Hepatic Surgery and Laparoscopic Hepatectomy: Atlas and Techniques.
