Proficiency in treating complex anal fistulas with sphincter-preserving surgeries (including advancement flap, LIFT procedure, and loose seton technique).
Treatment of rectovaginal fistulas using advancement flap technique and perineal proctotomy.
Management of rectal prolapse through abdominal rectopexy or perineal surgeries (Altemeier procedure, Delorme procedure).
Correction of traumatic and obstetric fecal incontinence via anterior or posterior levator aniplasty and overlapping sphincteroplasty.
Application of STARR procedure for constipation caused by obstructed defecation syndrome (ODS).
Treatment of pilonidal disease using various flap techniques (Limberg flap, Karydakis flap, and Bascom gluteal cleft elevation technique).
Integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and Crohn’s-related anal fistulas.
Performance of perineal, sacrococcygeal, and abdominosacral combined resection surgeries for presacral tumors and pelvic floor tumors.
Mastery of various anus-preserving surgeries for low rectal cancer, as well as pelvic floor reconstruction surgeries such as anoplasty, perineoplasty, levator ani muscle plasty, and sphincteroplasty. Dr. SHAO is committed to the development of pelvic floor reconstruction surgery and enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS).

Biographical sketch

From 1986 to 2023, Dr. SHAO served as Chief Physician in the Anorectal Surgery Department of the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine). From 2023 to 2025, he worked as Chief Expert at Shenzhen Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine for Anorectal Diseases.

In September 2006, Dr. SHAO studied at the Colorectal and Pelvic Floor Disease Center of KH St. Elisabeth Hospital in Vienna, Austria. From October to November 2006, Dr. SHAO pursued further studies at the Minimally Invasive Surgery Center of Tubingen University Hospital in Germany. In June 2007, Dr. SHAO was invited to attend the 2nd World Congress on Colorectal and Pelvic Floor Diseases in Rome, Italy.

In June 2009, Dr. SHAO received the International Scholarship from the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) for further study in the United States, serving as a visiting scholar at the Cleveland Clinic and the University of Minnesota Medical Center. Dr. SHAO was also invited to give an oral presentation at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS).

In 2008, Dr. SHAO published 1 SCI paper in the British Journal of Surgery, an internationally authoritative journal. In 2009, Dr. SHAO published 2 SCI papers in the International Journal of Colorectal Diseases, which were included in the 2nd and 3rd editions of the ASCRS Colorectal Surgery Textbook. Additionally, Dr. SHAO has published more than 10 papers in the Chinese Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery.
