The SRRSH Department of Surgical Oncology was founded in 2000, and focuses on breast, thyroid, parathyroid disease, digestive tract tumor, malignant melanoma, and soft tissue tumor. With increasing numbers of breast diseases, especially breast cancer, our department established the Breast Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center in 2011, as well as a breast cancer multidisciplinary diagnosis team in 2013, so that every patient with breast disease who visits the clinic receives standardized treatment in parallel with the international standard.

SRRSH Surgical Oncology is one of the responsible units for a doctoral degree in oncology of Zhejiang University and a national key discipline. Also, our center was acknowledged as the National Quality Control Center in Breast Cancer Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment. Furthermore, the Chinese Medical Doctors Association Breast Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Standardization and Minimally Invasive Rotary Resection Surgery Training Base was set in our department. In addition, our center was awarded as a network MDT team leader unit in Zhejiang province. Beyond that, the Breast Cancer Network Collaboration Center of the Beijing Society for Cancer Prevention and Control encompassed our center as its member.

There are 33 physicians, 1 department assistant and 1 PI assistant in the department, including 6 chief physicians and 11 deputy chief physicians,1 doctoral supervisor and 5 master's supervisors. All physicians earn a master's or doctoral degree.

The department has cooperative relations with many international advanced breast treatment and research centers such as Loma Linda University Health, Perter MacCulum Cancer Center in Melbourne, Australia, MD Anderson Cancer Center in the United States, Ohio State University Cancer Hospital in the United States, Shizuoka Prefectural General Hospital in Japan, Cambridge University Affiliated Hospital in the United Kingdom, and Mayo Clinic in the United States.

The discipline construction is centered on medical treatment, and has four major functions: breast cancer research, disease prevention, medical education and patient care.

We took the lead in carrying out breast conserving surgery for breast cancer, sentinel lymph node biopsy, breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery, breast endoscopic surgery, minimally invasive treatment of breast diseases and breast tube mirror in the province. In recent years, the department has introduced a daytime surgery model for breast tumors, so that some patients with benign breast tumors and some early breast cancer patients can be surgically admitted and discharged within 24 hours, which is very convenient for the patients and reduces the cost of hospitalization. Since 2019, the department has cooperated with the team of Professor ZHANG Songying of the Fertility Center at our hospital to carry out one-stop fertility preservation or ovarian protection treatment for young breast cancer patients to improve the quality of life of patients.

Thyroid and parathyroid tumors: follow the international guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid and parathyroid tumors, and strive to explore and carry out minimally invasive treatment of thyroid cancer under the premise of standardized treatment. Endoscopic assisted small incision thyroid surgery is routinely carried out in our department, and translactic total endoscopic thyroid cancer radical resection and oral thyroid surgery have achieved cervical scar-free. In addition, a screening and individualized treatment system for people at high risk of recurrence of thyroid cancer at the gene level is being established.  

The department is also highly experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal tumors, and body surface soft tissue tumors. Gastrointestinal tumors multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment mode has been carried out routinely in our department. At the same time, the use of minimally invasive technology combined with sentinel lymph node biopsy for early gastric cancer patients in individualized diagnosis and treatment not only ensures the treatment effect of gastric cancer patients, but also avoids excessive treatment. Besides that, the department has extensive experience in diagnosis and comprehensive treatment for melanoma, including nuclide sentinel lymph node biopsy and complex tissue repair surgery, and we’ve built a multidisciplinary team with pathology, dermatology, imaging, orthopaedics departments to ensure every patient receive the most appropriate treatment.

In recent years, the department has participated in or been responsible for more than 20 international and domestic multi-center breast cancer latest drugs or new treatment models of clinical research, and actively explored the translational research of breast cancer and thyroid cancer from both clinical and basic aspects, accumulating a certain research foundation. Every year, the department holds large-scale continuing education projects such as the SRRSH International Academic Week Oncology Surgery Session, the Minimally Invasive Breast Treatment Workshop, the Breast Cancer MDT Team Tour, and the Breast Thyroid Tumor Boutique Surgery Short Course, which promotes the improvement of the regional breast disease diagnosis and treatment level.

Since 2010, the department has undertaken 11 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, and more than 10 projects from the Department of Science and Technology of Zhejiang province. We have published dozens of papers in domestic and international academic journals, more than 10 of them are high level articles.
