Welcome to the 15th episode of 24 Solar Terms & Health!
The first breeze of Begging of Summer blows through SRRSH, injecting the vitality of a bright season. It’s not just a shift on the calendar; it’s a vibrant celebration of longer days in Hangzhou, blooming flowers, and the sweet promise of juicy cherries and plums ripening under the sun.
Health tips from our Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physician:
Nourish the Heart with Light Foods: In TCM, summer is associated with the Heart. Choose hydrating, mildly bitter foods like cucumber, bitter melon, and leafy greens to clear heat and nourish the heart. Avoid overly greasy or spicy foods to prevent internal heat.
Regulate Thermal Exposure: While modern cooling systems provide immediate comfort, TCM emphasizes the importance of maintaining Yang Qi vitality by allowing the body to sweat naturally and avoiding excessive exposure to cold air conditioning early in the season.
Limit Cold Beverages: Excessive consumption of iced drinks, frozen desserts, and raw cold foods can harm the Spleen and Stomach, leading to symptoms such as bloating, reduced appetite, diarrhea and fatigue. For occasional indulgence, balance cold drinks and snacks with warm teas containing ginger, cardamom or cinnamon.
