Welcome to the 20th episode of 24 Solar Terms & Health!
Sanfu, the hottest time of the year, is here— embrace Major Heat. When sweltering air meets the blazing sun, how to beat the heat becomes the theme of summer life. A taste of juicy watermelons, a cooling breeze under the shade, or a whiff of fresh lotus leaves all bring a joyous and refreshing touch to this indelible season.
Health tips from our Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physician:
Tea for "Sanfu Days": The hottest period of summer, known as "Sanfu Days," falls within Major Heat. Traditionally, people drink "Fu Tea," a blend of honeysuckle, prunella vulgaris (selfheal), and dandelion, to naturally cool the body. Unlike iced drinks, this herbal tea provides gentle relief without disturbing digestion.
Being calm and composed: Summer can strain mental well-being and disturb the “heart spirit” in TCM. Practices like yoga and meditation help reduce irritability and "heart heat." A peaceful mind preserves energy and promotes seasonal harmony.
Gentle Sunbathing for Vitality: Expose your back to mild morning sunlight (around 7-8 AM) for 20-30 minutes. This practice is believed to absorb Yang along the spine (Governor Meridian), promoting vitality.
