Overview

The Radiology Department of SRRSH is one of the training centers for medical imaging residents of the National Health Commission (NHC)  and the key discipline of Zhejiang Province. It has both master's and doctoral degree programs at Zhejiang University. The department is equipped with a wide range of the latest and advanced CT, high field MRI and angiography machinery, mainly produced by companies such as Siemens from Germany, General Electric from the United States, Philips from the Netherlands, Canon from Japan, United Imaging from China, and Mindray. Located in Qingchun, Qiantang, Grand Canal, Shaoxing and Shuangling campuses, the Radiology Department carries out X-ray, fluoroscopy, MRI, CT, angiographic diagnostic and interventional investigations in diverse fields including gastrointestinal, neurological, vascular, as well as other procedures. The Radiology Department boasts a complete PACS system ensuring a paperless, film-free and also fast image transmission process to serve patients.

 There are 26 physicians and technicians with senior professional titles, and 26 physicians with medical PhD degrees. The departmental Chief Professor HU Hongjie, is a member of the Cardio Thoracic Group of the Radiology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the Vice Chairman of the Radiology Branch of the Zhejiang Medical Association. The former Chief of the department, Professor ZHANG Shizheng, is a well-known expert in the Imaging Radiology Committee of the Chinese Medical Association, the head of the Abdominal Professional Group and the Chairman of the Radiology Branch of the Zhejiang Medical Association. Deputy Director Dr. DENG Liping and chief physician Dr. SUN Jihong are the Standing Committee Member and the Member of the Committee of Radiology Branch of the Zhejiang Medical Association respectively. Chief physician Dr. ZHENG Weiliang is the Standing Committee member of the Intervention Branch of the Zhejiang Medical Association. Deputy chief physician Dr. ZHANG Qiaowei is a member of the Radiology Branch of the Zhejiang Medical Doctors Association. Chief radiographer Dr. REN Hong is the Vice Chairman of the Imaging Technology Branch of the Zhejiang Medical Association.

 Despite our clinical obligations, the Radiology Department also undertakes scientific research and teaching work and leads many research projects such as projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Outstanding Youth Projects of Zhejiang Province Natural Science Foundation, Outstanding and Major Projects of the Department of Science and Technology of Zhejiang Province, Qianjiang Talents and many other projects. The department excels in training PhD, masters, undergraduates, residents and interns.

Recently the Radiology Department has been in line with Japan and some European countries. It is the first to implement the sub-specialty model in Zhejiang Province with 4 sub-specialties, namely neural imaging, musculoskeletal imaging, cardiothoracic imaging, abdominal imaging and interventional diagnosis and treatment, all spearheaded by competent and professional physicians.

 With sincerity and commitment, all the staff members of the Radiology Department strive to provide services of the highest standard to patients with advanced equipment.

Technical advantages

SRRSH's Radiology is one of the first departments in Zhejiang Province to establish interventional therapy clinics and wards. Over the past 30 years, the team has accumulated rich clinical experience in minimally invasive interventional therapy, and has independently carried out various surgeries in the province. It is one of the most influential departments in terms of minimally invasive interventional therapy with the most advanced equipment in Zhejiang Province. It continuously refines and innovates in aspects such as neuro-intervention, tumor intervention, hepatobiliary intervention, and peripheral and reproductive intervention. Now, both the Qingchun Campus and the Qiantang Campus have large-scale interventional wards. At the same time, the department radiates to the Grand Canal Campus and the Shaoxing Campus of our hospital, achieving full coverage of interventional therapy in all four campuses. The minimally invasive interventional subgroup of the Radiology Department regularly goes to Xinjiang to provide counterpart support for the construction of the minimally invasive interventional subgroup of the Alar Hospital affiliated with SRRSH, bringing benefits to the people of Xinjiang.

In 2023, with the joint efforts of multiple experts from multiple disciplines, the first domestic interventional operation for precise treatment of liver cancer using yttrium [90Y] microsphere injection through the distal radial artery approach was successfully completed. The implementation of this operation means that SRRSH has embraced another specialty in the field of liver cancer treatment. It also reflects the leading role of the minimally invasive interventional subgroup of the Radiology Department in interventional therapy in the province and even in the Yangtze River Delta region.

    As one of the malignant tumors with a relatively high mortality rate in China, liver cancer has hidden early symptoms and has the characteristics of "high recurrence and easy metastasis". The interventional operation with yttrium [90Y] microsphere injection, as the most advanced interventional therapy technology globally, is also an innovative treatment method in China. It can not only treat tumors but also implement transformation for surgical operations. It is like a precisely guided "miniature nuclear bomb" - by precise positioning, it enters the blood vessels of the patient's liver, releases high-energy beta rays, and instantly kills tumor cells at close range, with almost no impact on normal liver tissue and the surrounding environment.

    In April 2023, the Capacity Building and Continuing Education Center of the National Health Commission announced the list of the first batch of national peripheral vascular intervention construction centers and tumor minimally invasive intervention construction centers. SRRSH was selected and became the only unit in Zhejiang Province selected for the construction of the "double centers", which is inseparable from the strong support of the minimally invasive interventional subgroup of the Radiology Department.

   In the field of peripheral vascular intervention, the department has carried out interventional therapies such as stent implantation for peripheral vascular stenosis, aneurysm embolization, vena cava filter implantation, uterine fibroids, benign prostatic hyperplasia, pelvic congestion syndrome, and postpartum hemorrhage. In terms of tumor minimally invasive interventional therapy, liver cancer/lung cancer interventional techniques, such as TIPS, intravascular tumor treatment (such as yttrium [90Y]), ablation treatment, tumor radioactive particle implantation treatment, etc. are all routinely carried out. The specialty areas include radial approach intervention, cryotherapy, puncture robots, etc. More than 1,000 liver cancer/lung cancer-related interventional operations are carried out every year. In addition, the minimally invasive interventional subgroup of the Radiology Department routinely carries out neuro-intervention-related treatments such as intracranial aneurysm embolization, intracranial artery stent implantation, emergency thrombectomy, and interventional therapies for all systems of the body.

Research achievements

The department is responsible for 25 national projects and has published 680 papers. Among them, there are 108 SCI papers with the employees of the Radiology Department as the first authors and 13 papers with an impact factor (IF) greater than 10. The highest IF is 32.

The department has also obtained 16 national patents and 1 Japanese invention patent and achieved one second prize and one third prize of the provincial scientific and technological progress award.
