The Department of Anesthesiology of SRRSH, is the key discipline in Zhejiang province, the specialist training base of the National Health Commission, the National Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Standardized Training and Demonstration Base, the Pain-free Endoscopy Training Base of the Chinese Association of Anesthesiologist, the Target Control Infusion Technology Training Center and the Inhalation Anesthesia Technology Training Center of the Chinese Society of Anesthesiology, the master and doctoral degree granting disciplines of Anesthesiology, Zhejiang University.

The department is a team of 117 staff members which includes 23 with senior titles, 2 doctoral mentors and 6 master mentors. The clinical anesthesia work covers 80 operating rooms on 4 campuses, with 35 outside-operating rooms (including cardiac cath lab, neurointervention surgery, gastrointestinal ESD surgery, pain-free tracheoscopy and gastroscopy, etc.), 80 post-anesthesia care unit beds, 67 preoperative preparation beds. There are also 2 information-based centralized anesthesia assessment and education centers across the two campuses. The department routinely opens anesthesia clinics.

The department has strong technical capacity and excellent clinical ability, which performs more than 140,000 cases of surgical anesthesia annually. The total number of the third and fourth class of operations is on the top rank of Zhejiang province, including anesthesia for heart, liver, lung, kidney and multi-organ combined transplantation, complex cerebrovascular surgery, complex airway surgery assisted by bronchoscopy, complex cardiac and major vascular surgery, robotic surgery, laparoscopic hepatobiliary, pancreatic surgery, severe spinal deformity correction, multi-joint replacement surgery, severe multiple organ dysfunction surgery and obstetric surgery, etc.

The Department is not only equipped with world-class anesthesia and monitoring facilities, such as top brand multi-function anesthesia station, transesophageal and transthoracic Doppler ultrasound, thromboelastography (TEG), continuous cardiac output monitor, cerebral oxygen saturation monitor, but also has strong anesthesia technology strength. Therefore it has widely carried out procedures such as  perioperative ultrasound visualization, hemodilution and autologous blood transfusion technology, pain-free delivery and difficult airway management. We are the first anesthetic Department in China to set up the APS (Acute pain services), specializing in the implementation of multimodal individualized analgesic treatment by using various analgesic techniques, especially ultrasound-guided nerve block.

The department focuses on postgraduate training and clinical practice,attaching great importance to the basic and clinical research on anesthesia and pain,and undertaking a bunch of high-quality, multi-center clinical research. In the past 5 years, it has undertaken 8 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and 5 projects funded by the  Provincial Natural Science Foundation of Zhejiang, including 1 key project. More than 10 articles are published and collected by Science Citation Index annually. Key research directions include perioperative organ protection, basic research and clinical treatment of pain,anesthesia brain science, etc.
