From the Beginning

One day when I was 14 years old, I became ill with a severe stomachache. My parents were quite worried and took me to the emergency room of a local hospital in Hangzhou. I was admitted because of the seriousness of my condition and stayed in the hospital for a few days. The enthusiastic service given to me by the nurses during my stay left a deep impression on me. I began to dream of becoming a nurse when I grew up.

That dream eventually came true. After graduation from my junior high school, I enrolled in Hangzhou Nursing School. When I graduated three years later, I obtained my first job at the newly created Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, built from the ground up in partnership with Loma Linda University. As one of the first batch of employees to ever work here, I was assigned to the General Surgery Department. We accepted help and all kinds of training in order to be able to provide complete medical care.   For example, some of us nurses completed a rotation at the in-patient wards at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University in order to gain more practice in giving injections and after surgery care. In addition, SRRSH Administration arranged for us to have English conversation classes and to study Medical Terminology in English. That was 25 years ago. We ushered in the opening of a new hospital. Now, I work in the Out Patient Clinic, but I still love my hospital and enjoy my job.
