Welcome to the 24th episode of 24 Solar Terms & Health!
Bidding farewell to summer, Autumn Equinox, opens the door for a promising, golden season. Cool air has silently crept in, lending the earth the beauty of balance between heat and coldness, day and night. A bumper harvest is in sight. Embrace the change and enjoy the journey.
Health tips from our Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physician:
Layer Up: As the saying goes, "After the Autumn Equinox, each night grows colder." This solar term marks the balance of Yin and Yang, with Yang fading and Yin rising. As the weather gradually cools down, dress in layers and avoid excessive cooling at night.
Reduce Spicy Foods Intake and Eat More Sour Foods: According to Sun Simiao’s Essential Formulas in the Tang dynasty, autumn is a time to cut back on pungent foods such as garlic, onions, and chili peppers. Instead, embrace more sour foods like citrus fruits, hawthorn, and green apples.
Stay Calm, Preserve Energy: To ward off the seasonal blues, cultivate a calm and peaceful mindset. This helps the Yang energy gradually retreat as the body prepares for winter. Also, avoid intense physical activity at night to prevent over-exertion.
