The international healthcare clinic where Prof Tom received his treatment

“A model of professionalism, efficiency, and compassion.”

This is the comment of Prof. Tom (not his real name), from an internationally renowned hospital, about Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital (SRRSH) after his 48-hour stay here as a patient.

During his academic exchange in China, he suddenly fell ill and he "had feared that this illness would prevent him from returning to his home country on time". What he didn't expect was that within two days, he received an immediate neurological assessment, a seamlessly arranged lumbar MRI, and a rapid multi-disciplinary team (MDT) consultation.

Upon learning the news, Dr. Wang Jin, Senior Consultant of the Neurology Department at SRRSH, promptly conducted a comprehensive and professional neurological assessment for Prof. Tom. What impressed him the most was the hospital's standardized diagnostic process, which ensured that his lumbar MRI was completed in the shortest possible time. The smooth and efficient diagnostic procedures allowed this international expert to personally experience the effective and well-organized operation of Chinese medical institutions.

After a detailed physical examination and review of the imaging data, Dr. Zhao Fengdong, Senior Consultant of the Orthopedics Department, analyzed that the patient's prolonged flight had caused fatigue in the lower back and paravertebral muscle groups, leading to functional decline. A bending motion subsequently triggered disc pathology, resulting in local nerve compression and muscle strain. Following an in-depth discussion, the team unanimously agreed to perform a local block treatment for Prof. Tom.

Due to long-term use of anticoagulant medication, the patient was at risk of bleeding. Therefore, Dr. Song Haixin, Consultant of the Rehabilitation Department, precisely located the compressed nerve root under ultrasound guidance and performed a local block injection in the intervertebral foramen area. Following the treatment, Prof Tom's pain was quickly relieved, and his mobility significantly improved. No bleeding occurred after the needle was removed. From struggling to walk to moving freely, the entire process was compact and smooth, allowing him to return as scheduled.

Facing the complexity of his case due to ongoing anticoagulant therapy, doctors at SRRSH performed a precise, ultrasound-guided nerve block. The result? A rapid recovery, enabling him to return to the U.S. on schedule.

Prof. Tom's experience is more than a patient story; it's a testament to the world-class healthcare available in China today.
