Huge News! Congratulations to Professor Cai Xiujun, President of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, for being elected as an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

This is one of China’s top scientific honors, celebrating his lifelong dedication to minimally invasive medicine and smart medicine. This achievement fuels our mission to deliver exceptional care and drive medical innovation for our community and the world.

Prof. Cai Xiujun has long been dedicated to pioneering research and minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of abdominal diseases, achieving groundbreaking outcomes in the development of minimally invasive devices, technological innovation, surgical technique creation, and intelligent diagnostics. His surgical innovation include: developed the laparoscopic multi-functional surgical dissector, established the laparoscopic scraping and aspiration dissection method for liver resection and the laparoscopic regional hepatic vascular occlusion technique—which has been incorporated into the Multimedia Atlas of Surgery Liver Surgery Volume of the American College of Surgeons—as well as regional hepatic vascular occlusion and the two-stage completely laparoscopic ALPPS using the round-the-liver ligation (Cai's ALPPS), reshaping the landscape of surgical treatment for liver diseases.

He invented biodegradable intestinal anastomotic stents and biodegradable intestinal diversion stents, pioneering “stent-based intestinal anastomosis” and “intestinal diversion with a degradable stent,” achieving the world’s first “sutureless” intestinal anastomosis and “stoma-free” intestinal diversion. Leading his team, he performed the earliest remote surgeries in China, ushering in the era of 5G remote robotic surgery and overcoming the worldwide challenge of a lack of force feedback in robotic procedures.

He has led multiple national research projects and has chaired the compilation of 7 clinical guidelines and consensus statements. As the author or editor of more than 10 monographs and textbooks, he founded the first English-language journal in minimally invasive medicine, Laparoscopic, Endoscopic and Robotic Surgery. He holds 46 authorized Chinese invention patents, 18 international patents, and has obtained 11 medical device registration certificates.

His accolades include two National Science and Technology Progress Awards (Second Prize), one National Technology Invention Award (Second Prize), five first-prize provincial/ministerial awards, the National Innovation Award, the Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Award—Major Contribution Award, the Tan Jiazhen Life Science Award, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Award for Scientific and Technological Innovation, the Wu Jieping Medical Innovation Award, and the 2025 Invention and Entrepreneurship Award (Contemporary Inventor).
