Medical Collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative: Bangladeshi Physicians Visit Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital to Study Cutting-Edge Thyroid Ablation Technology
As the Belt and Road Initiative continues to deepen cross-border medical cooperation, three endocrinologists from Dhaka Medical College Hospital in Bangladesh, including Dr. Md. Humayun Kabir, recently visit our hospital for a specialized observational exchange on thyroid ablation technology. This exchange marks a concrete step forward in Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital (SRRSH)’s participation in Belt and Road medical collaboration and opens a new chapter in Sino-Bangladeshi medical cooperation.

With the high global incidence of thyroid diseases, minimally invasive ablation technology has become a key development direction due to its precision, safety, and cosmetic advantages. The “Radiofrequency Ablation for Low-Risk Thyroid Microcarcinoma” program at SRRSH was established and refined under the leadership of Dr. Xie Lei, Head of the Department of Head and Neck Surgery, and Dr. Li Shiyan, Head of the Department of Ultrasound. As the only thyroid disease diagnosis and treatment technology guidance center in Zhejiang Province authorized by the Health Department, SRRSH has attracted continuous visits and training from domestic and international peers thanks to its clinical expertise and standardized training system.

During the surgical observation session, Dr. Zhou Liang and Dr. Xu Haishan performed live demonstrations of thyroid ablation procedures respectively. Dr. Zhou Liang meticulously executed key steps, including needle insertion and ablation with steady and standardized techniques, while Dr. Xu Haishan, leveraging her extensive experience in ultrasound diagnosis and treatment, provided real-time guidance throughout the procedures, achieving precise lesion localization and ablation. Dr. Md. Humayun Kabir and the other two Bangladeshi physicians observed with great focus, frequently asking questions and actively engaging in discussions. They expressed high appreciation for the exceptional skills of SRRSH physicians and the rigorous, standardized diagnostic and treatment processes. This exchange not only facilitated the sharing of technical expertise but also made medical professionals from the two countries closer, fostering professional consensus and friendship.

Dr. Md. Humayun Kabir and his colleagues concluded this exchange with a wealth of technical insights and practical experience. This cross-border medical interaction not only showcases the strength of SRRSH’s thyroid ablation technology but also serves as a vivid example of Sino-Bangladeshi medical cooperation under the Belt and Road framework, laying a solid foundation for further deepening collaboration in the future.
Moving forward, under the guidance of experts such as Dr. Xie Lei and Dr. Li Shiyan, our hospital will continue to uphold the spirit of open collaboration. Using technology as a bridge and exchange as a bond, we will actively build an international medical cooperation platform, promote the dissemination of advanced technologies like thyroid ablation along the "Health Silk Road" to benefit more countries and regions, and contribute more Chinese wisdom and strength to the global development of thyroid disease diagnosis and treatment.
