Robotic-Assisted Joint Replacement Surgery: Indonesian Experts Fly to Hangzhou for an Observation Visit

Recently, the Department of Orthopedics at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital affiliated with Zhejiang University School of Medicine (SRRSH), welcomed three orthopedic experts from Indonesia. They made a dedicated trip to Hangzhou to observe, in real time, the robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery performed by the hospital's joint surgery team. This was not merely a high-level surgical demonstration but also a vivid example of SRRSH's efforts to promote intelligent orthopedics on the international stage and deepen academic exchange between China and Indonesia.

A 74-Year-Old Grandmother's "Double Knee Rebirth"

 

The patient is a 74-year-old woman who had suffered from severe knee pain due to rheumatoid arthritis for over four years, with complete cartilage wear, obliterated joint spaces, significant osteoporosis, and associated deformities and malalignment. Two months prior, she had successfully undergone a left total knee replacement under the team of Senior Consultant Dr. Shi Peihua, assisted by the surgical robot, and achieved an excellent postoperative recovery. During the operation, the robot's three major advantages came to the fore: precise osteotomy with millimeter-level margins; balanced gap management with real-time monitoring of soft tissue tension and precise release to restore flexion-extension balance; and reconstruction of limb alignment, correcting deformity in a single step and reducing the risk of long-term complications. The depth and angle of prosthetic implantation were perfectly consistent with the preoperative plan. Throughout the procedure, Dr. Shi Peihua provided simultaneous commentary on key technical points and addressed the Indonesian experts’ questions, offering them an immersive experience of China’s capabilities in intelligent orthopedics.
