Which Scientific Weight Loss Approach Works Best? Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital's Multidisciplinary Team Wins National Championship

Previously, the Weight Loss MDT Team from Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, affiliated with Zhejiang University (SRRSH), had dominated the Eastern Regional Competition, clinching first place. Now, advancing to the national finals, the team once again outperformed all rivals with a real-world complex obesity case, precise diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making, and seamless multidisciplinary collaboration—rising from regional champion to national champion.
Top Teams Competing on the Same Stage—How Prestigious Is This Competition?
The 2026 China Obesity Congress (COC2026) is a premier annual academic event in the field of obesity prevention and treatment in China, distinguished by its scale, high profile, and broad academic influence. It brings together academicians, disciplinary leaders, and renowned scholars in obesity prevention and treatment from both China and abroad, serving as a vital platform for academic exchange in this field.
The “Weight Down, Life Up” Obesity MDT Diagnosis and Treatment Capacity Enhancement Project, organized by the China Obesity Federation, is China's first national-level MDT-focused competition in the obesity field. The competition spanned five months, covered seven major regions nationwide, and brought together outstanding weight-loss MDT teams to compete. All cases submitted were derived from real-world clinical practice, with the competition focusing on teams’ abilities in precise stratification, multidisciplinary assessment, diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making, individualized treatment planning, and full-course management for complex obesity cases.
After multiple rounds of rigorous selection, seven representative teams—each a regional champion—converged at the COC2026 national finals. At the finals, the SRRSH team presented a real-world complex obesity case, demonstrating the depth and humanistic touch of MDT care across the entire continuum—from precise stratification and multidisciplinary assessment to individualized treatment planning—ultimately earning high recognition from the judging panel and capturing the national championship.
More Than Just a Competition: A Critical Exploration of Standardized Obesity Diagnosis and Treatment
The competition centered on multidisciplinary obesity care, systematically exploring standardized MDT care pathways, talent development models, and quality evaluation systems. The resulting MDT consensus, clinical benchmarks, and quality control standards will provide replicable, scalable, and actionable practical references for standardized obesity diagnosis and treatment nationwide.
Obesity treatment is not the “solo effort” of any single specialty. Patients with obesity often present with multiple comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, fatty liver disease, and sleep apnea, and they vary significantly in weight, metabolic status, lifestyle, complications, and treatment needs. High-quality obesity care requires the joint participation of multiple specialties, including surgery, endocrinology, nutrition, exercise medicine, and psychology, to select appropriate treatment modalities (lifestyle intervention, pharmacotherapy, interventional procedures, surgery, etc.) based on each patient’s specific condition, along with long-term management.

Behind the National Title: Years of Accumulated Expertise in Weight Management
As one of the first national demonstration centers for the Standardized Development and Quality Improvement Project in Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, and the largest bariatric and metabolic surgery center in Zhejiang Province, the SRRSH Center for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery owes its success to no stroke of luck.
Currently, the center performs approximately 800 surgeries annually, with a cumulative total of nearly 4,000 bariatric and metabolic procedures. It has established a MDT model involving dedicated case managers, a dietitian team, and experts from multiple disciplines. Technologically, the center has pioneered specialized techniques including single-port and triple-port sleeve gastrectomy, with refined perioperative management enabling rapid patient recovery and discharge within 36–48 hours post-surgery. After years of development, the SRRSH Center for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery has evolved from a standalone surgical weight-loss center into a comprehensive weight-management platform integrating nutritional counseling, exercise intervention, pharmacotherapy, interventional procedures, and surgical treatment.
The center has innovatively proposed a comprehensive treatment philosophy, “lifestyle modification as the cornerstone, medical interventions as the supplement”, which spans the entire care continuum. For patients at different stages of obesity, with varying metabolic statuses and diverse treatment needs, the multidisciplinary team develops individualized plans through comprehensive assessment, paying close attention not only to “how much weight is lost” but also to metabolic improvement, comorbidity management, and long-term health benefits.
From “Weight Loss” to “Weight Management”: Safeguarding Long-Term Health for More Patients
Currently, the Zhejiang Provincial Health Weight Guidance Center is operational at the SRRSH Grand Canal Campus. As the first provincial-level health weight guidance center in China, it leverages SRRSH’s comprehensive disciplinary strengths to build a province-wide health weight management service network, enhancing public awareness of weight management and the integrated prevention and treatment of obesity-related chronic diseases. Winning the inaugural national championship in the Obesity MDT Diagnosis and Treatment Capacity Enhancement Project is a strong affirmation of SRRSH’s years of clinical practice and multidisciplinary collaboration, and a concentrated showcase of OUR comprehensive obesity care capabilities.
