In 1994, SRRSH was established, and thoracic surgery was one of the earliest key departments established. For many years, the department has maintained long-term collaborations with institutions such as Mayo Clinic in the United States, Loma Linda University, Monash Health in Australia, and Cabrini Medical Group. The department also maintains academic exchanges and talent exchanges with medical centers in multiple countries such as the United States, Australia, and Canada. Nowadays, the department has become a well-known center for the diagnosis and treatment of chest diseases in Zhejiang Province, with strong technical strength. The department always strictly adheres to international diagnostic and treatment standards, provides reasonable treatment for every patient, and is committed to providing world-class, high-quality, and comprehensive medical services for patients.

Thoracic Surgery at SRRSH adheres to the signature of "minimally invasive technology" and introduces the most advanced high-definition, 3D thoracoscopy equipment and da Vinci robotic surgery system. SRRSH thoracic surgeon routinely carries out thoracoscopic and robot assisted anatomical lobectomy of lung lobes and segments, bronchial and pulmonary artery shaping surgery, mediastinal tumor resection, total laparoscopic esophagectomy (lvor Lewis surgery and McKeown surgery), cervical thoracic junction tumor resection surgery, etc. In addition, led by Thoracic Ssurgery and in collaboration with Respiratory Medicine, Respiratory Therapy, Anesthesia, Intensive Care Unit, Rehabilitation and other disciplines, the Lung Transplantation Center has been established, which can routinely perform high difficulty surgeries such as sequential double lung transplantation and combined heart lung transplantation. More than 6000 surgeries are completed annually, with minimally invasive surgeries accounting for over 95%.

Thoracic Surgery is one of the first standardized training centers for resident doctors in Zhejiang Province. It has the qualification to enroll doctoral and graduate students and undertakes the standardized training tasks for those from Zhejiang University and resident doctors from multiple lower level hospitals. After nearly thirty years of continuous development, it has gradually become a chest disease diagnosis and treatment center integrating clinical practice, scientific research, and teaching, and enjoys a high reputation in China.

Since 2018, dozens of papers have been published in academic journals both domestically and internationally.
