Established in 1994, the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at SRRSH, is one of the first National Regional Medical Center for Respiratory Diseases co-built by the state and the province. It is also a national clinical key specialty, the Zhejiang Provincial Office for Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Respiratory Diseases, and the Zhejiang Provincial Technical Guidance Center for Respiratory Disease Diagnosis and Treatment. The department is a core unit of the National Respiratory Research Center, one of the first units in the country to receive a third-level excellent rating in the standardized construction evaluation of the Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) department. It is a key discipline of the Zhejiang Provincial Health Commission, a doctoral degree conferring unit of Zhejiang University, the president unit of the Zhejiang Provincial Physician Association's Respiratory Physicians Branch, the chairman unit of the Zhejiang Provincial Pulmonary Vascular Alliance, the chairman unit of the Zhejiang Provincial Respiratory Endoscopy Alliance, and the chairman unit of the Zhejiang Provincial Respiratory Therapy Alliance. The department has developed into the most outstanding, distinctive, and influential core system in the center in four major areas: clinical diagnosis and treatment capabilities and technology of respiratory diseases and critical care, construction of PCCM, prevention and treatment of chronic diseases and tiered diagnosis and treatment, and clinical teaching and research product transformation.

The department currently has 196 beds, including 25 beds in the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU). It treats over 10,000 inpatients per year and has an annual outpatient volume of over 200,000 visits, with more than 2,000 respiratory endoscopic surgeries performed yearly. The department has 52 clinical physicians, including 9 chief physicians, 11 associate chief physicians, 1 doctoral supervisor, and 3 master's supervisors, with more than 50% of the physicians holding a doctoral degree. The department personnel have led 19 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, 1 National Major Scientific Research Instrument Development Project, Zhejiang Province's "Leading Goose" R&D Attack Plan, and over 50 provincial and departmental-level projects. The team has obtained more than 10 national patents, 4 provincial scientific and technological progress awards, and multiple awards from the Health Commission of Zhejiang Province. Nearly 300 papers have been published, including over 100 SCI papers with the highest impact factor of 14.903.

(I) Diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary vascular diseases (pulmonary embolism, pulmonary arterial hypertension, etc.)

Our department is the first in Zhejiang Province to carry out standardized diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary embolism and pulmonary arterial hypertension. It is a thrombosis prevention demonstration unit of the China Health Promotion Foundation, and the chairman unit of the Zhejiang Provincial Pulmonary Vascular Alliance. The department leads and formulates the prevention system for deep vein thrombosis for the hospital and the region. In 2019, it was awarded as one of the first batch of excellent units in the national construction of prevention and treatment capabilities for pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. It has hosted ten national continuing education classes on "Progress in Diagnosis and Treatment of Pulmonary Vascular Diseases", training thousands of physicians. The department also opened the first respiratory specialty clinic for pulmonary vascular diseases in the province, accumulating rich clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary vascular diseases.

(II) Bronchoscopic Interventional Treatment

Our department's respiratory endoscopy diagnosis and treatment technology is leading in the province, being one of the first units in Zhejiang Province to carry out interventional treatment under bronchoscopy. It performs the highest volume of complex and critical interventional surgeries in the province and has received the most physicians for respiratory endoscopy intervention training. The team has patents and developments such as tracheal stents, multifunctional electrocoagulation knives, universal stent implanters, and degradable stents. They have proficiently carried out various endobronchial interventions such as EBUS, airway stent implantation, balloon dilation, cryotherapy, thermal ablation, bronchial thermoplasty, and diagnostic procedures using medical thoracoscopy and rigid bronchoscopy. Since 2016, the department has annually hosted high-quality surgical demonstrations and advanced seminars on respiratory endoscopy intervention, and in 2017, it was recognized as a training base for respiratory endoscopy physicians by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, having trained over 1,000 respiratory interventional physicians.

(III) Early Diagnosis and Standardized, Individualized Treatment of Lung Cancer

Our department has been committed to the development of early lung cancer screening and comprehensive standardized treatment. It has participated in several international multicenter clinical studies of anti-tumor drugs. In terms of research, over the past five years, the department has obtained five national and provincial-level projects related to lung cancer. It has also developed interdisciplinary research with the Department of Biomedical Instrumentation at Zhejiang University, collaborating to independently research and develop a new MOS-SAW composite sensor electronic nose device, providing an auxiliary technical platform and means for the early screening and diagnosis of lung cancer. Additionally, the department has established a lung cancer patient registry and a lung cancer specimen bank, providing a platform for scientific research.
