Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital (SRRSH), affiliated with Zhejiang University School of Medicine, serves as a National Clinical Teaching Demonstration Center, dedicated to cultivating high-caliber medical professionals and driving innovation in medical education. As the Third Clinical Medical School of Zhejiang University, the hospital offers 42 doctoral programs and 49 master’s programs, hosting 22 nationally accredited residency training bases, including five key specialty bases. Equipped with state-of-the-art educational facilities, such as 4,000 square meters of teaching space, integrated clinical skill training and OSCE assessment systems, and an AI-driven intelligent supervision platform, SRRSH has established a fully digitalized teaching management system for seamless instructional oversight.
SRRSH emphasizes an internationalized approach to medical education, collaborating with esteemed institutions like Michigan State University and Loma Linda University. It has adopted competency-based medical education principles and achieved teaching accreditation from the UK Royal College of General Practitioners and the Royal College of Surgeons. The hospital has garnered prestigious accolades, including recognition as a National Top Ten General Practitioner Training Base, provincial teaching achievement awards, and gold medals in national student innovation competitions. Moreover, SRRSH has introduced the Mayo Clinic’s classic faculty development courses to enhance clinical teaching capabilities.
Looking ahead, SRRSH aims to deepen the integration of medical education and research, leveraging its status as a National Clinical Teaching Demonstration Center to nurture the next generation of exceptional medical professionals and uphold its core mission of “People First, Life First.”

SRRSH has introduced a number of new concepts of medical education with the excellent platform and resources brought by the internationalization of the hospital.
President Cai Xiujun once proposed that doctors who account for 5% of the staff should be engaged in clinical teaching. Under this guidance, SRRSH has developed an excellent teaching team, whose members participate in clinical teaching and academic research. The hospital has established a classified teaching faculty group, promoted the management of clinical teaching positions and the classification management of performance evaluation for promotion to senior professional titles, and built a quantitative assessment system for clinical teaching work. On this basis, a special mechanism for the promotion to senior professional titles in teaching has been established, sparking the enthusiasm of clinical teachers. SRRSH has also set up 33 assistant positions for clinical department teaching directors as part of the clinical teaching management system, which boosts the efficiency of teaching management and teaching quality across the hospital.
The hospital currently has 1018 clinical teaching staff members, including 38 dedicated to medical student teaching, 57 to international student teaching, 26 core teachers, 58 backbone teachers, and 50 senior teachers. At present, there are 49 master's degree programs, and 42 doctoral degree programs; 78 doctoral supervisors, and 155 master's supervisors. Of the senior teaching and research personnel, there are 1 Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor, 3 members of the Higher Education Instruction Committee of the Ministry of Education, 1 "Sanyuren" Post Exemplary Individual with Contributions in Zhejiang Province, 2 new (trans) century outstanding talents of the Ministry of Education, 1 provincial famous teacher in Zhejiang Province, 1 "Most Beautiful Teacher" in Zhejiang Province, 1 outstanding teacher in Zhejiang Province, and 1 outstanding university teacher in Zhejiang Province; 1 Zhejiang University level renowned teacher, 6 winners of the Zhejiang University Quality Teaching Award, 3 Zhejiang University "Sanyuren" Teaching Models, and 1 Zhejiang University "Wuhao Mentor Team".

Home to one of the first national clinical teaching and training demonstration centers authorized by the Ministry of Education and the National Health Commission, SRRSH boasts first-class teaching facilities and teaching levels in China.
With the efforts of the original Department of Science and Education, the medical education of SRRSH has been progressively enriched with unique features. In 2010, the hospital collaborated with Genesys Regional Medical Center of Michigan State University in the United States, gradually forming a unique general practitioner training model, which has become a training example in China. In 2011, the Department of Internal Medicine cooperated with Loma Linda University Health in the United States to train resident physicians, established the earliest residency program in the nation and introduced competency-based medical education. Since 2012, we have increased investment in skills training and simulation training. We led our team to attend the 2014 and 2017 National College Student Clinical Skills Competitions and won the second prize in the national finals in 2017, which is the best performance for Zhejiang University since its representative teams began to participate in the competition. In 2019, the medical student representative team of SRRSH won the top four awards in the Zhejiang University School of Medicine Clinical Skills Competition, honored with the team award. In 2014, SRRSH was selected as one of the first national standardized training bases for resident physicians. Now we have 22 professional bases.
In 2015, our Surgical Simulation Skills Center and the center's courses were accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons in the UK. In 2016, the SRRSH Department of General Practice became the first in China to receive teaching certification from the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) in the UK. The specialty was also honored with the first prize for teaching achievements in Zhejiang Province. From 2016 to 2019, a total of 6 SRRSH employees were awarded the Honor of Post Graduation Education Work by the Chinese Medical Association, among whom President Cai Xiujun was honored with the title of "Top 10 National Residential Training Base Leaders of the Chinese Medical Association" in the first session. In 2017, SRRSH was awarded the title of Top 10 General Practitioner Training Bases in China. From 2017 to 2018, the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and the Department of General Surgery were selected into the first batch of standardized training bases for specialists. From 2020 to 2021, SRRSH's Internal Medicine, Surgery, General Practice,Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Obstetrics and Gynecology departments were successively selected as national key professional bases for standardized training of residents.
Since the Department of Education was established in 2018, SRRSH's education and teaching have developed rapidly, making great progress.
First of all, the Department of Education has strengthened the ideological and political education of graduate students, supported by full-time management staff members. The department has organized the party affairs for graduate student party members according to relevant standards, carried out educational activities of "Party-League-Class" with distinct themes and features, and selected excellent doctors as freshmen's friends, head teachers, moral education instructors and part-time tutors to realize the seamless connection between clinical training and ideological and political management. Our graduate students won two gold medals in the China International "Internet Plus" University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in 2021, and two gold medals in the first National Health Industry Youth Innovation Competition in 2022.
Second, the Department of Education focuses on enhancing teachers' abilities and creating a sound teaching atmosphere. The teaching office regularly organizes teacher training across the hospital every month with self-designed basic and advanced courses to enhance the capacity of clinical teachers. Over the past three years, a total of 3173 people have been trained and 417 training certificates have been issued. At the same time, by promoting teaching reform, educational research, and curriculum development, we have obtained 45 provincial and above level projects, 54 school-level projects, and have invested more than 2.5 million CNY for the establishment of education and teaching reform innovation project fund and research and construction supporting grants.

The Department of Education has established a full-fledged information-based teaching management platform, which boasts functions such as teaching activity management, attendance tracking, teaching performance statistics, teaching evaluation, teaching resource reservation, and online learning. The department has promoted the deep integration of information technology and medical education by providing the "UpTo Date" clinical decision-making system for teachers and students for free and encouraging students to conduct evidence-based medical information retrieval and self-learning. The department has also created a cloud library app to offer a free full-text search platform for Chinese and foreign literature to faculty members and students. The new clinical training center covers a teaching space of 3800 square meters with simulation equipment worth 6.508 million CNY. Various kinds of teacher and student simulation training are conducted throughout the year, with a total of 3075 participants.

It has taken the lead in setting up a student exchange program across SRRSH, sending a total of 18 undergraduate students to study at well-known medical institutions such as Loma Linda University Health, Stanford Health Care, Brigham and Women's Hospital, etc. Meanwhile, the Department of Education maintains cooperation and exchanges in teaching with many famed international medical education institutions such as Cambridge University School of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in the United States, the University of Western Australia Medical School, and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and Royal College of Surgeons in the United Kingdom. A total of 20 clinicians as medical educators were sent for training. Every year, dozens of overseas students come to SRRSH for further studies and internships. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Education continued to carry out online cooperation and exchanges. The department introduced Mayo Clinic's classic clinical teaching ability improvement educator training courses and conducted a joint Grand Round (case discussion, consultation) with Mayo Clinic, with 1000-odd teachers and students trained online.

In the 2021 national ranking of medical education paper publications, SRRSH ranked 28th among 671 affiliated (teaching) hospitals in China in terms of paper publications in 2020, ranking in the top 5%. We have received 3 provincial teaching achievement awards and authored 16 clinical medical textbooks and 4 new form medical textbooks. At present, 13 MOOC projects have been completed and 13 virtual simulation experiment teaching and training projects have been obtained with 2 high-quality online and offline hybrid courses.
