Endocrinology and Metabolism
Overview
Established in 1994, the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at SRRSH, is a comprehensive department integrating clinical practice, medical research, and teaching. Responsible for Zhejiang Province's standardized residency training, it is authorized to offer doctoral degree and master's degree programs in Endocrinology and Metabolism by Zhejiang University School of Medicine. The department operates across four campuses: Qingchun, Qiantang, Grand Canal, and Shaoxing, with more than 100 designated beds. It sees over 200,000 outpatient visits and more than 6,000 inpatients annually. Leveraging its affiliation with Zhejiang University and direct collaboration with Loma Linda University Medical Center and the Mayo Clinic, the department has developed special expertise in managing diabetes and its chronic complications, obesity, diabetic foot, adrenal disorders, and more. The department is a key medical discipline in Zhejiang Province (Innovative Discipline), one of the first national training bases for continuous glucose monitoring technology, an insulin pump training base, and a national diabetes education demonstration unit. In 2021, it established a National Standardized Metabolic Disease Management Center, and in 2024, it joined the National Obesity Diagnosis and Treatment Alliance, further enhancing its capabilities in the management of diabetes, obesity, and other metabolic diseases. The department has also established a strong multidisciplinary collaboration model with departments such as head and neck surgery, ultrasound, urology, interventional radiology, and orthopedics for the treatment of thyroid diseases, adrenal disorders, bone metabolism diseases, and diabetic foot. It is a leading department in Zhejiang Province for diagnosing and treating complex and severe endocrine diseases. The department currently has 38 physicians, including 3 doctoral supervisors, 7 master's supervisors, and 18 senior professionals. Nearly half of the physicians have undergone advanced training in Europe and the United States. It offers specialized outpatient clinics, including clinics for obesity and weight management, diabetic foot, thyroid disorders, hypertension, and pituitary-adrenal-gonadal diseases.
Additionally, the department is equipped with a chronic complication screening room and a bone density examination room, featuring advanced diagnostic tools such as non-mydriatic fundus cameras, Doppler blood flow meters, vibration and sensory threshold detection devices, bone density scanners, and visceral fat measurement instruments. The department also has dozens of insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors. It boasts an independent basic research PI laboratory, covering an area of 150 square meters, and maintains long-term partnerships with renowned medical schools and hospitals worldwide. The department has made significant contributions to the diagnosis and treatment of complex endocrine diseases, metabolic syndrome prevention and treatment, fat metabolism research, basic and clinical studies of diabetic nephropathy, and research on pancreatic beta-cell function.
