Overview

The Department of Clinical Laboratory is one of the core departments of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, which is an integrated team responsible for medical care services, education and scientific research. We have a comprehensive subspecialties system including clinical examination, biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, molecular mass spectrometry, blood transfusion and quality control. Our lab is equipped with first-class domestic and foreign large and medium-sized testing equipment and automatic testing lines, carrying out more than 600 testing items. With a complete quality control system, the lab has gotten ISO15189 and CNAS medical laboratory certification. This department currently has 140 employees, more than 35% of whom own doctor's or master's degrees and 19 of whom are experienced senior experts. All the above-mentioned advanced equipment, comprehensive quality control system, competent staff and complete subspecialties system ensure that this lab provides accurate testing services and instructive diagnosis consulting services for both patients and clinicians.

 

The first leadership group of professional pathologists and management elites from the American Loma Linda University Medical Center established this department. Since then, it has made remarkable achievements. For example, our lab has become a base of reference laboratory for clinical laboratory testing quality, a standardized quality control center for physician training in laboratory medicine discipline, and a key laboratory of precision medical testing and monitoring research in Zhejiang Province. In addition, this lab was also nominated as one of the top ten departments of Clinical Laboratory in China in 2014.

 

Our strengths lie in three areas. First, we are equipped with a large number of world-class large and medium-sized testing equipment, which assures accurate, timely, complete testing services. Routine testing analyzers include Beckman AU5800 automatic biochemical analyzer, E801 chemiluminescence immunoanalyzer, STAGO STA R-MAX automatic blood coagulation analyzer, BIOMERIEUX Vitek2 automatic bacterial identification and drug sensitivity instrument, and so on. Additionally, we have also established mass spectrometry detection platforms like AB SCIEX Triple Quad 4500MD liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry detection system, AB SCIEX QTRAP 6500 LC/MS/MS mass spectrometry, VITEK MS automatic microbial mass spectrometry detection system, and sequencing platforms like Huada Zhizao MJI second-generation sequencer and Sipei GeneXpert XV molecular diagnosis system.

 

Second, we independently developed a laboratory information system (LIS), which has been applied in many hospitals inside and outside Zhejiang Province. This allows us to design and update the information system according to our needs, which ensures more accurate reports delivery and improved efficiency. In addition, we also make full use of the flexible and powerful LIS system to perform data mining through artificial intelligence (AI), and have developed reliable and accurate diagnosis, treatment and monitoring models for tumor, infection diseases, cardiovascular metabolism diseases and other major chronic diseases.

 

Third, our lab is committed to laboratory developed tests (LDT). In recent years, the clinical demand for personalized medicine and precision medicine is gradually increasing, while the update and iteration of clinical laboratory test products are lagging behind. Oriented by clinical needs, we start with discovering new biomarkers for disease diagnosis and prognosis and transforming them into clinical use. For now, we focus on early diagnosis of cancer in the high-risk population, diagnosis and identification of infectious diseases, monitoring and mechanism of bacterial resistance, and prevention of cardiovascular metabolic chronic diseases. We have establishd related diagnostic technology platforms such as early rapid detection platform for clinical drug-resistant bacteria, molecular sequencing diagnosis platform and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry workstation.

[Achievement of Research]

The department has undertaken almost twenty National Natural Science Foundation projects, as well as more than ten provincial projects. More than one hundred high-quality academic papers have been published. Some technical transformation projects have won the second prize and the third prize of Science and Technology Progress in Zhejiang Province, and the second prize of Medicine and Health Science and Technology in Zhejiang Province.

[International Exchange and Cooperation]

Our department has a close relationship with Loma Linda University Medical Center, Michigan State University, and Université Paris-Est. Over 20 of our staff members have overseas exchange experience.
