What's the secret of SRRSH's fast improvement over the past 30 years since its establishment? Six key aspects shed light on our path.

  • 80%

Endoscopic surgery and robotic surgery account for 80% of the total surgeries

  • 2012

Established the first "minimally invasive medicine" discipline in China in 2012

Minimally Invasive Medicine

The first "minimally invasive medicine" discipline was established in 2012 by SRRSH, one of the first hospitals in China to introduce and develop minimally invasive technology. SRRSH's minimally invasive technology has expanded to internal medicine and nearly all surgical fields, with endoscopic and robotic surgery accounting for 80% of all surgeries. Many surgical techniques and technologies are the first in China and the world, forming a distinctive feature of "broad coverage, large quantity, and innovation."

  • The hospital has the first Minimally Invasive Medicine discipline in China, the first National Engineering Research Center for the Innovation and Application of Minimally Invasive Devices in China, and the only Minimally Invasive Medicine doctoral degree program in China. For many years, the number of single-machine robot operations has been among the greatest in the nation. This has also fueled advancements in minimally invasive technology in internal medicine specialties including interventional and endoscopic clinics.

  • In the areas of minimally invasive hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and gastrointestinal surgery, lower back pain diagnosis and treatment, assisted reproduction, and the diagnosis and treatment of complex coronary heart disease and atrial fibrillation, it has advanced to both domestic and international leadership levels.

The first completely laparoscopic two-step liver resection using the liver band method was featured in Nature; the first scraping and aspiration dissection method for liver resection was included in the "Multimedia Surgery Atlas of the American College of Surgeons"; the first stent-based intestinal anastomosis eliminated the shortcomings of traditional anastomosis techniques (suture and staple intestinal anastomosis) with a straightforward procedure and quick anastomosis speed, which is consistent with the idea of minimally invasive surgery; Nearly 1,000 patients with low rectal cancer nationwide have benefited from the world's first stent-based intestinal diversion surgery, which replaced the ileostomy that has been used internationally for 167 years. It can prevent three to six months of artificial anus retention and secondary reduction surgery, lower medical costs, and lessen patients' physical and mental suffering. It was also the first to propose the idea of the anterior inferior psoas muscle approach and the first clinical application guideline for lumbar oblique lateral interbody fusion was published in China.

Together with the Xinjiang Alaer Hospital, the hospital spearheaded the establishment of the Zhejiang Medical Association's Robotic Surgery Committee in 2023. It also pioneered the use of 5G technology and domestic surgical robots over thousands of miles, performing the first domestic 5G ultra-long-distance domestic robot cholecystectomy and the first 5G ultra-long-distance domestic robot-assisted liver resection surgery in history. These actions expanded the scope of remote diagnosis and treatment applications.

Additionally, the hospital established Laparoscopic, Endoscopic and Robotic Surgery (Chinese: Laparoscopic, Endoscopic and Robotic Surgery), the country's first international magazine on minimally invasive surgery.

The Belt and Road Minimally Invasive Academy has also been established. More than 200 international students from nearly 50 medical institutions in 20 countries and regions along the "Belt and Road" have attended SRRSH's international minimally invasive surgery technology training courses for the "Belt and Road" medical talent training alliance, the "Belt and Road" minimally invasive surgery training class, the "Belt and Road" international minimally invasive medicine vein forum, etc.
