Gastroenterology
Overview
The SRRSH Department of Gastroenterology was established in 1994. It integrates clinical care, medical research, and clinical teaching, and serves as a standardized training base for Zhejiang province. It is the responsible unit for gastroenterology doctoral degree at Zhejiang University School of Medicine. The department operates across four campuses: Qingchun, Qiantang, Grand Canal, and Shaoxing, with an annual outpatient volume exceeding 320,000 visits, over 20,000 hospital discharges, and nearly 180,000 endoscopic procedures each year. The department has been ranked among the best clinical disciplines in China and has received recognition from Fudan University for its achievements.
The department has 70 clinical physicians, including 29 senior specialists, 41 with Ph.D. degrees, and 29 with master's degrees. In addition, there are 12 full-time researchers, along with guest and adjunct professors. Several members have served or currently serve as vice-chairpersons or members of various national and provincial gastroenterology associations. Many physicians have undergone advanced studies in Europe and the United States.
The department specializes in the management of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases, gastrointestinal motility disorders, and early-stage digestive cancers. It is home to a National Inflammatory Bowel Disease Treatment Center and serves as a model center for the standardized treatment of Helicobacter pylori infections. It also plays a significant role in rare diseases research, such as hereditary angioedema and conducts multicenter clinical research in the treatment of internal hemorrhoids and esophageal varices.
The department's IBD center is a national leader in the diagnosis and treatment of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, with one of the largest IBD databases in China. Over the years, the department has developed advanced diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities for hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases, including interventional endoscopy for pancreatobiliary diseases. Additionally, the department excels in the management of chronic constipation, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and motility disorders, making it a national leader in these areas.
The department has pioneered techniques for the early detection and treatment of precancerous lesions in the digestive tract, including computerized calibration biopsy technology and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for early-stage cancers. Recent developments include capsule endoscopy, minimally invasive treatments for hemorrhoids, and fecal microbiota transplantation.
